Successful Thoracic Duct Ligation for Plastic Bronchitis in an Adult
2017, Annals of Thoracic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Plastic bronchitis is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition characterized by the development of occlusive fibrinous airway casts. Although the direct cause of this condition has yet to be discovered, many cases have been associated with increased pulmonary venous pressures resulting from congenital cardiac conditions and corrective surgical procedures, as well as other cardiopulmonary pathologic conditions [1, 2, 4]. Because of the unpredictability and severity of disease progression, the development of treatment strategies is paramount in preventing fatal sequelae of this poorly understood disease.
A rare case of plastic bronchitis in an adult patient after cardiopulmonary bypass
2016, Annals of Thoracic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :In nonsurgical patients, plastic bronchitis has been associated with underlying pulmonary disease such as bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis. In reviewing the literature, we found only 2 cases of plastic bronchitis in an adult after cardiopulmonary bypass [6, 7]. In 1 case, the patient exhibited a mild delayed presentation with dyspnea as an outpatient shortly after her CABG procedure [6].
