2011, Nitric Oxide - Biology and ChemistryCitation Excerpt :Recognizing that GENTA-induced nephrotoxicity is a model of oxidant-induced renal failure, one might easily suggest that NO, because of its free radical nature might contribute to tubular damage. Previous studies have demonstrated that NO and peroxynitrite may play an important role in renal tubular injury in vitro [35,36] and in vivo [32,37]. In this study, our hypothesis is that at 10 days gentamicin treatment, systemic NO synthesis increases in an attempt to counterbalance the effects of the vasoconstrictors like angiotensin or vasoconstrictor prostaglandins, or even the reduced vasodilator prostaglandins and kinins stimulated by this aminoglycoside, as shown previously [17,18].
