Case reportIdiopathic Pulmonary Vein Thrombosis: A Rare Cause of Massive Hemoptysis
Section snippets
Comment
Based on our scouring of published articles, spontaneous or idiopathic pulmonary vein thrombosis (PVT), as a cause of massive hemoptysis necessitating lung resection is unrecorded in the Anglophone scientific literature. As the entity is relatively unknown and inadequately described in traditional texts, the review that follows attempts to address some pertinent areas of interest (the notation “spontaneous” or “idiopathic” is prefixed to PVT in this case, as no precipitating cause could be

2019, Respiratory Medicine Case ReportsCitation Excerpt :Thrombectomy has been successfully performed when medical therapy fails. Lobectomy may be indicated when PVT is complicated with massive hemoptysis or pulmonary necrosis [6,8,14]. Our patient was started with treatment with anti-tuberculosis medications and systemic anticoagulation.
Pulmonary vein thrombosis in patients with medical risk factors
2018, Radiology Case ReportsCitation Excerpt :Polycythemia vera [14], blunt chest trauma [15], autonomic nervous system dysfunction [16], and treatment of asthma with omalizumab [17] also have been reported in combination with pulmonary vein thrombosis. Pulmonary vein thrombosis also may be idiopathic [18–21] especially in the elderly [22–24]. We report 2 patients with pulmonary vein thrombosis, 1 with renal cell carcinoma and metastasis to the lung and 1 with presumed pulmonary aspergillosis.

2014, IJC Heart and VesselsCitation Excerpt :Although antibiotics were used in earlier cases, they lack a proven role when the PVT are not associated with infection [22,23]. If lung infarction is suspected because of a severe clinical status, then embolectomy or lobe resection may be indicated [22,24]. The aim of the present study was to clarify whether PVT were rare or not in patients with chest pain, but they didn't have these predisposing factors and whether dabigatran dissolved PVT or not.
Thrombosis in the pulmonary vein stump after left upper lobectomy as a possible cause of cerebral infarction
2013, Annals of Thoracic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Adjuvant chemotherapy was a marginal risk factor for thrombus. Some reports about the causes of PV thrombus have included idiopathic, radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation, pulmonary arteriovenous malformation, and pulmonary arteriovenous fistula [7–11]. These thrombi sometimes cause embolism to vital organs [8, 11].
