2019, Biomedical Signal Processing and ControlCitation Excerpt :Patients who received surfactant treatment had lower specific elastance (99% CI difference in medians: -0.49 [-0.48 -0.48] cmH2O.kg/ml) compared to those that did not (Patients 5 & 8 vs Patients 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, & 10) with p ≤ 0.01. This result matches expected behaviour as surfactant lowers the surface tension, thus lowering the pressure required to keep alveoli and airways open [6,47,48]. Elastance decreased with increasing patient weight.
