Experimental studies have also demonstrated physiological changes (e.g., decreased lung capacity and increased alveolar wall thickness) in the lungs of rats exposed to cadmium (Hart, 1986; Lai and Diamond, 1992). These results suggest that cadmium exposure can lead to an inflammatory response that is accompanied by increased levels of oxidative stress in the lung (Kirschvink et al., 2006).
